  • 1. Would you like to add your web address at this point?

    Tastee Bros Website

    Scootergalp@earthlink.net

  • 2. Was your family background musical?

My mother's side is very musical. My Mom plays piano and sings. She has written several gospel songs. Both her parents play Piano and sang. She has 2 sisters that also sing and one of them plays bass. I have a cousin that's a drummer. Unfortunately my father's side can only play the radio :-)

  • 3. What made you decide to play trumpet?

Hmmmm....I'm not sure really.I think somewhere around 5th grade they asked if any of us wanted to join band and I said yes. I just picked trumpet.

  • 4. At what age did you start?

    Well, let's see....5th grade....I guess I was around 11.

  • 5. On leaving your education, have you always been a full time musician?

Yes, pretty much. I was never really good at the part time job thing and I always wanted to be a "player".

  • 6. Describe your early experiences of semi / pro work.

I think I had my first real gig when I was in high school. It was Christmas of my Senior year and it was a Christmas show.I was playing 2nd and remember being really blown away by the 1st trpt player. He had a great sound and that's what I wanted to do, was play like that. I attended 2 different College's for my education and in between those I did some cruise ship work. Also did Ship work on Christmas and summer breaks from the 2nd college. The 2 college's were Univ. of Nevada Reno and Univ. of North Texas.

  • 7. What theatre experience have you had?

I haven't done a whole lot of that actually. I did one thing back in 98 for about 3 months and it drove me completely bonkers. I did the national tour of West Side Story. Maybe It drove me nuts because I was the only trpt player.

  • 8. What Orchestral experience / Big Band have you had?

I haven't done any orchestral work. Not my cup of tea I guess. I've played in lot's of big bands though. Started off with MF's band right out of North Texas. Played in several one's in Los Angeles including....Mike Barone, Steve Huffstetter, Bill Holman, Tom Kubis, Mark Masters ,Bobby Caldwell, Buddy Childers, Jack Sheldon, Chris Waldon, Jim Widner....I guess that's it.

  • 9. What Film recording experience have you had?

I've only done a couple of those. No clue what the movies are though. One was an independent film for a friend/composer from North Texas and the other one was with the Bobby Caldwell band. I wish I knew the names, I just go in, play and collect the money and run - HAHAHAHA

  • 10. What session (Jingles / TV) experience have you had?

Haven't done a whole lot of those either.Towards the end of my stint at North Texas was when I started playing those. I remember doing some car commercials and a McDonalds commercial. My first gig when I moved to LA was actually a jingle for German Television which I did with Bobby Shew, Carl Saunders and Sal Cracchiolo. Bobby got me on that one.

  • 11. What small group / ensemble experience have you had?

The only small group stuff I did was at North Texas. It was fun and I had a blast doing it. It's not my forte though.

  • 12. Other playing experiences?

Well, I just finished up doing Paul Anka's band for the last 2 years. It was a great band and there were some awesome players out there, but Anka is just too much to handle sometimes.

  • 13. Would you list some of your recording work for others.

Well, I don't have a whole lot to list actually.

Duke Ellington - Duke Ellington Songbook (1997)
Maynard Ferguson & Big Bop - One More Trip to Birdland (1996)
Joe McBride - Double Take (1998)
Various Artists Concord - Jazz Christmas, Vol. 2 (1988)
Various Artists - Duke Ellington Songbook (1997)

  • 14. Would you list your past solo recordings

I've never done anything on my own. But I did have a couple feature tunes while I was at North Texas. In '94 I played "Danny Boy" and in '95 played "Maynard Ferguson"

  • 15. Any news on new projects?

Not really. Just kinda taking it easy at the moment. I did get called for a $10 gig today though. :-)

  • 16. Favourite four albums?

    Chet Baker- Autumn Leaves
    Third Eye - Blind
    Anything MF recorded
    Anything Bobby Shew recorded

There's no way I can only pick 4! I could go on forever.

  • 17. Favourite two movies?

    Southpark
    Goodwill Hunting

  • 18.Favourite three foods?

    Mexican
    Pizza
    Ice Cream

  • 19. Non-musical hobbies / points of interest you enjoy?

I love computers. Most of my free time is spent on a computer. Eating-HAHAHA. I Joined the gym recently, trying to take off all the food I love to eat. I'm a big movie freak too. I used to watch at least one a day. I don't have time to do that now though.

  • 20. Do you take days off from playing? (How does it affect you?)

Yeah, I can take time off.

I'm fine if I only take a day or 2 off.
It's when I take a week off that I have to spend a week getting my playing back to where I like it.

I try not to do it too often though and especially if I have important gigs come up.
Actually, I consider everything I play an important gig. I want to sound as good as possible everywhere I play.

I once took 3 weeks off just to see what it would feel like. I think I was fine after a week though.

  • 21. Any funny stories from your MF days?

I do have a funny little story .We had like 3 different kinds of clinics that would happen out on the road with Maynards band. One where all the band would do one together, another one where we would start off doing one all together then split off into different sections.,then one where MF would just do it by himself. There happened to be one where Maynard did one by himself and he wanted to have me sit out in the audience so we could play a joke on everyone. In the middle of his clinic he started talking about how if you buy a holton trpt you will play a double C because ALL Holton trpts come with a double C.So he starts walking around the audience with his horn and is asking if anyone brought a mouthpiece with them.Well, wouldn't you know,I just happened to have mine :-)So he gives me his horn and I play one and then act all surprised and just can't believe it.It was pretty funny. He told everyone at the end of the clinic who I really was though.
