Maggio/Stamp/Gordon.....Both Jimmy Stamp and Claude Gordon studied under the auspices of LOUIS MAGGIO. Many of there principles and variation on the Maggio exercises are to be found in both guys methods. The simplicity of the Maggio system remains it's most alluring feature for usability. Claude Gordon also studied with Herbert L.Clarke also.

Observations.....Allen Vizzuti
says that "The Art of Brass Playing can be dangerous. A friend of mine found that book. After that he never played well, take everything with a grain of salt. No book is "a Bible". Somethings work for some people and not for others. Use common sense."
Bobby Shew
(a student of no-one) observed that upon buying a load of method books such as Maggio, Gordon, Callet, etc. discovered a lot of dangerous attitude among methods out there in respect of the "Do what I say" type syndromes.
Remember: "The best teacher is yourself."
Upon the request of Buddy Rich to play lead trumpet Bobby decided to ask Maynard how to do the high note thing. MF gave him a yoga breathing book called "the science of breath"
Bobby also decided to ask Bud Brisbois his system which included concepts which were opposite of accepted thinking at that time, [like lift your shoulders, etc.] Upon going home and trying to incorporate this into his playing by going to the back of the Clarke book [glissando
exercise.]
Bobby Shew says to remember
High notes = fast air, not lot of air.
Avoid over - blowing.
Back off = access to upper register.
Relax = wrong word, efficiency - good word
THE CHOP METHODS ARE MORE SIMILAR THAN YOU THINK --
IT'S HOW YOU BLOW THAT COUNTS!!!
