Similarities between the methods of...

MAGGIO / STEVENS / GORDON / ADAM
CALLET / MENDEZ / CLARKE

We're ALL more similar (than different) than you think....info for you to think about yourself and how it applies to you!

Stevens/Callet......

1. Good posture. Chest, arms and head up. Relax jaw and open throat.
2. Teeth 1/4 - 1/2inch apart. Jaw forward for teeth alignment.
3. Regular Mpc. placing, lips inward side to side [Ex.2] (JC)... Say "M" (RS)
4. Let the lips touch and expose to air. [Ex. 2](JC)... Say "M" [compressed lips] (RS)
5. Buzzing firmness before placing mouthpiece.[mid range] (JC) ...throughout (RS)
6. Place mouthpiece gently on lips, ride the airstream.
7. As little mouthpiece pressure as possible. Minimum pressure in all registers.
8. Breathe and blow. Don't hold it in, turn it around and out.
9. Always set chops, place mouthpiece, breathe, blow.

Maggio/Stamp/Gordon.....

Both Jimmy Stamp and Claude Gordon studied under the auspices of LOUIS MAGGIO. Many of there principles and variation on the Maggio exercises are to be found in both guys methods. The simplicity of the Maggio system remains it's most alluring feature for usability. Claude Gordon also studied with Herbert L.Clarke also.

Maggio/Mendez .........

Mendez at one point lost his chops probably due to excessive work and sought out Louis Maggio and spent time with guys like Herbert Clarke. Mendez tells the story that it was his father that helped him the most in recovering from his lip injury. But it took several years and several surgeries before he was able to play again as a comeback player - and HOW!

Adam/Stamp.....

It is widely accepted that James Stamp and Bill Adam's approaches are similar and the end results to the exercises are closely affiliated. Both Adam and Stamp were both keen mpc buzzers.

Observations.....

Allen Vizzuti
says that "The Art of Brass Playing can be dangerous. A friend of mine found that book. After that he never played well, take everything with a grain of salt. No book is "a Bible". Somethings work for some people and not for others. Use common sense."

Bobby Shew
(a student of no-one) observed that upon buying a load of method books such as Maggio, Gordon, Callet, etc. discovered a lot of dangerous attitude among methods out there in respect of the "Do what I say" type syndromes.

Remember: "The best teacher is yourself."

Upon the request of Buddy Rich to play lead trumpet Bobby decided to ask Maynard how to do the high note thing. MF gave him a yoga breathing book called "the science of breath" Bobby also decided to ask Bud Brisbois his system which included concepts which were opposite of accepted thinking at that time, [like lift your shoulders, etc.] Upon going home and trying to incorporate this into his playing by going to the back of the Clarke book [glissando exercise.]

Bobby Shew says to remember

High notes = fast air, not lot of air.
Avoid over - blowing.
Back off = access to upper register.
Relax = wrong word, efficiency - good word

THE CHOP METHODS ARE MORE SIMILAR THAN YOU THINK --
IT'S HOW YOU BLOW THAT COUNTS!!!
