Walt Johnson's "Ballad"
An Excerpt Taken From
"Double High C in 10 Minutes."
Below are two sound files...(recorded on the cheapy mic. and "Windows" sound recorder)... of me playing Walt Johnson's "Ballad", a great tune for practising long phrases, tone and airflow.
You should go and buy the book as it has some great stuff in there!!...click on the link...
It is also imperitive that as the register changes in the tune that you hold the same 'chop shape' don't try and reset..otherwise you get into all sorts of bad habits.
It is important that you learn to play your high register well, but not at the cost of losing your bottom register.
Lots of people end up developing 2 embouchures...1 for high and 1 for low.
This is not desirable at all. In an effort to stop this happening, you should practice what I call "Octave Switching" Exercises ...this should be done on simple tunes at first.
Below I've recorded the first sound file of "Ballad" as written in Walt's book, and the second sound file is "Ballad," as an Octave Switching Exercise - it should be fun! --but remember, keep the airflow high and don't 'shift or bob' the mpc. when changing registers!!!
